I have used all kinds of poles and some are way better than others. I have gotten better at 'mono'ing due to the fact that it is not uncommon to ski with A pole for the day, after breaking one.
Poles fall into four main categories: Extension, Aluminium, Composite, and Carbon.

Extension- Expandable poles are great if you are trekking, but not for riding a mono.
